What is The Sharpest Note?

The Sharpest Note is a collection of beginner music units designed to help children practice their instrument in a more musical and engaging way.

Each unit combines:

  • printable sheet music
  • simple play-along tracks
  • small, focused practice games

It is not a replacement for lessons, but a companion that helps practice feel clearer and more rewarding between lessons.

How does my child use it?

Your child:

  • plays from printed sheet music (just like in lessons)
  • scans a QR code on the page or opens a link from the teacher
  • practices with short musical activities on a phone, tablet, or computer

If the teacher shares material through The Sharpest Note using an open-access link, your child can open it directly — no account needed.

For extra features like interactive practice on your own, you can create a family account and try it free for 7 days.

Self-guided adult learners can follow the same flow: choose a unit, print, scan, and practice – or create an account to practice your own material interactively.

Is this meant to be used alone?

No, and that is intentional.

The Sharpest Note works best:

  • alongside regular lessons
  • with guidance from a teacher
  • in short practice sessions at home

The goal is to make practice focused and musical, not longer.

What age is this for?

The material is written for beginner-level students, typically:

  • children starting an orchestral instrument
  • early school-age beginners and up
  • students in their first couple of years of lessons

Exact ages vary, and teachers choose what fits best.

Do the games replace practice?

No.

The games are there to support:

  • listening
  • pitch awareness
  • rhythm
  • confidence

They are designed to reinforce what the student is already playing on their instrument, not to turn practice into screen time.

Does my child need their own account?

No. If the teacher shares assignments through The Sharpest Note, your child can use them through the shared link without any account.

If you'd like access to extra features (like the practice tier or games), you — the parent — create the account. For children under 13, the account belongs to the parent. Your child uses it under your supervision.

Is my child's data collected?

When using links shared from a teacher-level account, no personal data is collected — your child doesn't need to log in or provide any information.

If you create a family account, we collect only minimal data (your email and an optional name). We do not use advertising trackers. The site stores only the technical information needed for the tools to work, and of course, the music created with the composer tool.

You can read more in the Privacy Policy.

How does pricing work?

You can start with a free account — it includes our music games and the composer tool for creating tunes. Every new account also gets a 7-day free trial of all features, no credit card required.

For interactive practice features, the practice tier is available as a paid licence. Ready-made units with sheet music and accompaniments are available as separate one-time purchases.

There are no hidden fees and no automatic charges.

Who makes this?

The Sharpest Note is created by Pekka Pulli and Tarmo Anttila. Pekka is a Finnish sound and UX designer, developer, part-time composer, and dad of two string players. Tarmo is a Finnish double bass teacher, composer, and multi-instrumentalist.

The project grew out of real teaching rooms and real home practice: trying to create tools that sound musical, feel calm to use, and actually help students between lessons.
